A long story of passion for our land | Another 15 years were missing for Italy to be unified, and more than 50 years for the first FIAT car to be placed on wheels. In the same Region where these two important events had to be originated, the Mazzetti Family started their activity as Distillers, in the very heart of Monferrato.
It was in fact 1846 when Filippo Mazzetti (1816-1855) founded his first Grappa distillery in the town of Montemagno. |
At that time grape pomaces, from which grappa is distilled, were mainly considered a by-product of the wine production: due to carelessness and unreadiness of many winemakers of the time, pomaces were often not carefully selected and preserved, as it happens today in order to get the best destillates from them.
It is known that Filippo, and after him his Son, Luigi, were often complaining that this noble material was wasted, instead of being nobilitated, by transforming it into a precious and rare eau-de-vie, Grappa. This was certainly a very expensive and fatiguing task at first, but as times passed by, Filippo and his Son Luigi (who moved the distillery to Altavilla Monferrato) got to know and to appreciate the spirits obtained from pomaces coming from the different areas of Monferrato. They thus discovered, as their distilling skills got better and better, the immense sensory treasure which lies in their lands and in their grapes.
| In the new Century the Mazzetti distillery consolidated more and more into a reality strictly tied to the tradition of the Piedmontese master distillers. Felice Mazzetti (1902-1981) at first, and his Son Franco after him, established it as one of the most prestigious and awarded Grappa producers, in Italy and abroad. |
Today Cesare and Nicoletta, Claudia and Giorgio are proud to present, after 160 years from Filippo's first travels, their unmatched Collection of Single Varietal Grappas, all from Piedmont grapes. | The pomaces of these grapes, state-of-the-art distilled in steam copper pot stills, and the Family passion are the only ingredients of the Mazzetti d'Altavilla grappas which are still reminding the products of Filippo. From the most traditional ones, to the rarest and longest aged, they all are representative of all the aromas, biodiversity and traditions of our Land, Monferrato.
